SECOND-semester registration at UNISA brings about better changes for students.

The 2023 semester 2 registration for undergraduate, honours degrees, postgraduate diplomas, MBA and MBL on 28 July 2023 saw a new method of registration being introduced. The new registration method included communication from the institution via telephones and SMSs.

This comes after a number of students were unable to register as a result of the outstanding results. These were results from the May/June examinations which the institution works tirelessly to release.

370,000 students enrolled at UNISA for the year 2023. These are students who enrol through open distance learning and e-learning. UNISA offers its students flexibility, and they choose when, where and how they study.

54,000 students enrolled to obtain certificates, diplomas, degrees and postgraduates annually. The majority of UNISA students are undergraduates, with more than 40 820 enrolled for postgraduate. Of these postgraduates are masters and doctoral students at 10,699.

70,7 % are female students which has shown a massive growth of the student population.

"UNISA students are from around 110 countries other than South Africa with the majority being based in SADC and other African countries," said UNISA's statement.

In a statement, UNISA has specified that it has more than 40% of its students studying on a part-time basis.

Ethnically 84.4% of UNISA students are African, 7% white, 4.7 % coloured and 3.7% Indian.

62% of UNISA students are open-distance and e-learning students are offered the opportunity to study while pursuing their careers. Most of the students are more mature than residential universities. 62 % of students are aged between 25 and 39 years old.

UNISA is South Africa's largest and one of the mega distance teaching universities. the university was established in Cape Town in 1873 as the University of Good Hope and in 1916 was changed to the University of South Africa.

UNISA has enrolled some of the country icons which include Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, when he earned his first BA degree in 1942.

on 21 January 2021, Professor Puleng LankaBula was appointed as the principal and vice principal of UNISA. She studied theological ethics at the University of South Africa and did her thesis on the ethics of bioprospecting in 2006.

In 2023 UNISA will celebrate 150 years since it existence.
